Necropsy summary report for Central Puget Sound Marine Mammal Stranding Network (June 2006 – May 2008)

چکیده

Harbor seal Sex and age composition of the harbor seals consisted of four females and 1 male, all pups. Cause of death has not been definitively determined in any of the animals yet as histopathology is pending. A presumptive diagnosis of fishing gear entanglement was made in one female pup due to evidence of net marks on the pelage. There were two pups which showed signs of starvation, with a very thin blubber layer (< 3mm) and the gastrointestinal tracts empty. For the four animals on which limited necropsies/sampling were conducted, samples obtained included blubber and liver for contaminant analyses and skulls for life history data, educational use, and investigation for ballistic injuries.

Coccidioidomycosis and other systemic mycoses of marine mammals stranding along the central California, USA coast: 1998-2012.

A wide range of systemic mycoses have been reported from captive and wild marine mammals from North America. Examples include regionally endemic pathogens such as Coccidioides and Blastomyces spp., and novel pathogens like Cryptococcus gattii, which appear may have been introduced to North America by humans. Stranding and necropsy data were analyzed from three marine mammal stranding and respon...

Offshore Earthquakes Do Not Influence Marine Mammal Stranding Risk on the Washington and Oregon Coasts

The causes of marine mammals stranding on coastal beaches are not well understood, but may relate to topography, currents, wind, water temperature, disease, toxic algal blooms, and anthropogenic activity. Offshore earthquakes are a source of intense sound and disturbance and could be a contributing factor to stranding probability. We tested the hypothesis that the probability of marine mammal s...

Marine Mammal Strandings and Environmental Changes: A 15-Year Study in the St. Lawrence Ecosystem

Understanding the effects of climatic variability on marine mammals is challenging due to the complexity of ecological interactions. We used general linear models to analyze a 15-year database documenting marine mammal strandings (1994-2008; n = 1,193) and nine environmental parameters known to affect marine mammal survival, from regional (sea ice) to continental scales (North Atlantic Oscillat...

A Partnership for Modeling the Marine Environment of Puget Sound, Washington – Puget Sound Naval Shipyard/Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Report

Estuaries, fjords and sounds are important, major components of marine ecosystems worldwide. Because of this, and their generally poor treatment by man, large estuaries should be the focus of largescale, multidisciplinary, integrative modeling efforts. We need to both understand how these systems work, and be able to predict how they will respond to changes, whether natural or anthropogenic. Pu...
